“The only interesting thing this guy did was die in a plane crash” was supposedly said by a producer assigned to do the bio pic of the bandleader Glenn Miller. As most of us know, Mr. Miller got on a small plane in England in 1944 and flew off to Paris in an intense fog. His plane was never found. Some say he was shot down, some say the pilot got lost and they ran out of fuel. Others say that his plane was knocked out of the sky by the repercussions of bombs being dropped by B-17s that could not get to their target because of the fog (bombers were not allowed to land with their bombloads intact so the bombs were dropped into a designated spot in the English Channel).

The challenge was to make an interesting character about a bandleader whose band supposedly cheered when news of his plane gone missing was announced. This, along with the comment by the producer are stuff of the Hollywood rumor / legend machine. This picture is full of inaccuracies but the music is great (and accurately depicted), there is a sliver of truth in the story and the performances are worth it.

The venerable Gary Dennis closed Movie Place, 237 West 105th at Broadway, after 23 years and auctioned off what was considered one of the greatest private collections of DVD�s and videos ever assembled!

Gary, a popular local celebrity and movie critic, was memorialized by the Upper Westside�s paper of record on Sunday November 19, 2006 with a glowing tribute to his 23 years as a neighborhood institution and all around beloved character.

Gary may have closed his physical location but has promised his legion of fans that his movie advice and commentary will always be available on his website and blog.
