I thought that I would never do this but I am plugging a Broadway show. The Broadway stage had once been fertile ground for talent and scripts for the motion picture industry. Now it seems the opposite is true. Most of Hollywood’s legends came from this once in a moment of history thing that only New York could have ever possessed - the Broadway Theater scene. We are so lucky. What is also lucky is that we have this show, Passing Strange, here. It is miraculous. On a street that has too many shows based on cartoons I cannot stress what a breath of fresh air this show is. I mean, how much more are we going to learn about the mermaid? What’s next, Dumbo The Musical?

The plot of the not to well marketed show centers around a teenaged African American youth from the South Central LA of the late ’70’s. Not feeling like he fits into this world (South Central LA of the late ’70’s), a world where he believes no one sees him for who he really is, as an artist and person, leaves South Central and heads to Europe. The youth however cannot stay in one place too long. Once things start to feel real and secure he has to flee (to Berlin in this case). He thwarts his acceptance for who he is by running from those who do.

I cannot ever do this show justice in this forum. I can only urge you to see it before the Tony Nominations are announced. After that it will be the hardest ticket to get. Forget it after the Tony’s. See it now.
